Alternate Ending

Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized that they all shared a passion for movies. Tim had been reviewing films at his old blog Antagony & Ecstasy for over a decade, and Rob & Carrie had found great success with their year-old podcast, when they all decided to combine forces to create a new site, dedicated to their desire to watch and discuss the best (and worst) that cinema has to offer. The result is the website you see before you. What makes Alternate Ending different from all the other film sites on the internet? Well, we humbly suggest that it's the three of us: very different people with very different thoughts about the movie. Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well. This isn't a site for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a site for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a site for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a site for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It's a site that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It's a site about discovering good movies, one bad movie at a time.

It's a Patreon-palooza  this week thanks to Gavin (Society), Ann Yourell (The Mirror Has Two Faces), Travis (The Hill) and Carl Beasley (Secrets of the Hot Spring).  It was a bit of a Goldilocks story on this episode, with some movies being incredibly enjoyable, some just so-so and then so bad you want to light yourself on fire.

Which movie falls where? Tune in to find out!

This episode came a week later than expected, due to unforeseen, lower than expectations reviews of the Indiana Jones series from the Jarosinski children.  With an extra week gone by, we were prepared to face the situation head on. Sort of. Thoughts differ on Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny, but thankfully Tim finds it in his heart to only break Carrie's heart in written form and mostly spare her feelings on air. Sort of.

With thanks to Patreon M.C. Steffen Tim brings his review of Little Boy.  In retaliation for Tim's recent IJ reviews, Carrie makes Tim sweat by sharing her thoughts on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which is assures him will be spoiler-free.

Tune in and we hope you have a great week!

Hardcore Alternate Ending heads will remember one of our signature moments early in the life of the podcast was a baffling "Who's On First" style catastrophe of a discussion that swirled around the fact that Pontius Pilate, historical Roman governor of Judaea and major figure in the Christian Gospels, has a name that can be misinterpreted as sounding like he's an airplane pilot. One person who definitely remembered that affair was Patreon subscriber Gavin, who has forced us into a reckoning with our past in the form of his selection for our next podcast topic: our picks for the top 5 representations of Pontius Pilate in movies. Or whatever the almighty hell Carrie comes up with instead. It will, if nothing else, surely prove to be one of our most offbeat episodes ever. Tune in!

This episode of Pass the Popcorn, we're joined by friend of AE, Zev Burrows to catch up on what movies we've been catching up on.  We tried to scare Zev off with our personal burial plans, stomach bugs and the under-appreciated delicacy of spaghetti and cottage cheese ... but he held on like a champ until the end!

In worth mentioning, Zev brings his thoughts on There Was a Father.  Tim reviews Evil Dead Rise and Survive Style 5+, by Patreon Christophe Romain's request. Carrie reviews the 1944 classic Laura, requested by Zev.

Make sure to check out Zev's musical stylings at his site - www.zevburrowsmusic.com

AUDIO NOTE: Please forgive the intense hail that was inflicting Wisconsin while Tim recorded.

Thanks to Patreon supporter Harold Bleacher, we're going to be prodding at some of our most sensitive emotional scar tissue in our next episode: by his request, we're going to spend our next podcast talking about the top 5 most traumatizing films we've ever seen. Expect many dead parents of wide-eyed animal children, gore effects whose cheesiness through adult eyes can't quite take the edge off of the shock they gave to a child's system, and the odd film that coldly and brutally diagnoses the darkest parts of humanity in ways that can unnerve and unsettle us even now.

Tune in!

Brennan's Top 5:

  1. From Beyond
  2. The Normal Heart
  3. Mamá
  4. Grave of the Fireflies
  5. Seven Pounds

Carrie's Top 5:

  2. Open Water
  3. Saving Private Ryan

This week *should* be a big week here at Alternate Ending because it is, in fact, the week of the 95th Academy Awards. Though, it's fair to say that only 33% of us loves the Oscars, another 33% tolerates them and the other % mostly avoids them by sneaking away for snacks, in order to suppress their rage.  Though, that didn't stop our Pringle-eating critic from predicting 16 of the night's 95th Academy Awards winners.

In worth mentioning, Brennan and Carrie review the newest updates from the Woodsboro crew, in Scream 6.  Tim brings his thoughts on a few of the Oscar noms, but dives deep on his thoughts of the best picture nominee, Blonde.

Tune in and we hope the episode sparks a bit of joy, in your week!
