Alternate Ending

Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized that they all shared a passion for movies. Tim had been reviewing films at his old blog Antagony & Ecstasy for over a decade, and Rob & Carrie had found great success with their year-old podcast, when they all decided to combine forces to create a new site, dedicated to their desire to watch and discuss the best (and worst) that cinema has to offer. The result is the website you see before you. What makes Alternate Ending different from all the other film sites on the internet? Well, we humbly suggest that it's the three of us: very different people with very different thoughts about the movie. Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well. This isn't a site for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a site for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a site for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a site for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It's a site that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It's a site about discovering good movies, one bad movie at a time.

In 1985, when the first Fletch film was released in theaters, Marcia Gay Harden was a broke NYU grad student who was still 5 years away from her breakout role in Miller's Crossing. In the subsequent 37 years, Lady Marcia Gay Harden (inside joke you'll have to listen to understand) has racked up not only over 120 film and tv credits, but an Academy and Tony Award. But, as she tells it, her proudest achievement is being a mom and as any mom will tell you, a right of passage for kids going off to college is to do a tear filled drop-off, which is exactly where Marcia was on her way to do when she hopped on to chat with me about her latest film, Confess, Fletch.

While at a layover, she dished on how she landed the role as The Countess in Confess, Fletch alongside a fun ensemble, including John Hamm (taking the mantle from Chevy Chase), Lucy Punch, Kyle MacLachlan, Lorenza Izzo and John Slattery (who reunites with his Mad Man co-star Hamm).

For those who loved the original Fletch series or just a good comedy / PI romp, be sure to watch Confess, Fletch streaming everywhere, now!

It's a bit of a hodgepodge this week here at AE - lots of feelings about movies, theaters, streaming services, return to work, X-rated film reviews and more!

We had a real gift bag in worth mentioning this week, too!  Thanks to Patreon Julian DeBerry, we get to enjoy the peace and calm that comes with 1985's Soviet war film Come and See. Ann Yourell had us also exploring the debatably racist French film, The Intouchables. Lastly, let us not forget the film requested by M.C. Steffen, that had Tim wanting to quit film criticism altogether, Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas.

Tune in!

Remake month is drawing to a close, and Tim and Brennan have set upon a film that neither of them have seen before: 1990’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! After procrastinating on actually discussing the topic at hand, they break down exactly why this movie exists and try to figure out why it doesn’t ever quite meet its lofty goals.

Well, I'd like to say that Carrie, Tim and Rob are all back this week because the madness of Summer has come to an end, but that wouldn't be true, the madness of Fall is just upon us! Nevertheless, we did find the first week in a month that all of us were either healthy and in cell-phone range and we couldn't be happier about it.  The only thing that could possibly spoil this reunion euphoria is having to spend an hour talking about The Billy Jack series - and here we are! Thanks to Patreon supporter Gavin, we slogged our way through about 100 hours (ish) of a very Caucasian man, casting himself as an Indigenous man/Vietnam war vet and leveraging his Korean martial art, Hapkido, to take down real bad guys. If you're not entirely sold here, check out the episode!

In worth mentioning, Carrie covers the newly released Thor: Love and Thunder and Rob attempts to ensure you never want to see the decent movie Day Shift.

This week, Tim and Brennan are doing another solo episode while Rob and Carrie travel back from vacation! In Worth Mentioning, we cover two very different films about famous musical acts: Elvis (2022) and Can’t Stop the Music (1980). Then we dive into a conversation about the medium of television: where it was, where it is now, and why Tim doesn’t like most of it.

This week's episode is coming to you a week late, and for that we apologize. Though, fiesty-ness levels are high due to lack of sleep and new-phone-setup drama, so maybe we're not sorry.

From just plain defining "aliens" to just generally attacking each other for our alien preferences, the episode gets a little snappy.

But we'll let you decide, are Avatar's really aliens? Is Yoda just a really old human? We ask you decide, but there is really only one answer to all these questions.

Tune in!

Between that and the gung-ho feature length military advertisement Top Gun: Maverick continuing its jaw-dropping run at the box office (and secondarily, US Independence Day), it seemed like a perfect time to take a look at the long history of movies designed in part, or in full, to celebrate the love of Queen and Country, give or take the Queen.

We'll be bringing you our Top 5 patriotic movies, with celebrations of national pride from the U.S. and around the globe (Tim does love his Japanese WWII propaganda films), those films that make you want to stand up and sing the bits of the national anthem that you actually know the words to.

Listen to this surprisingly insightful and thoroughly entertaining discussion of Lightyear to see why Tim has it wrong. Also discussed is a little inside information about an upcoming fantasy movie in the works directed by Ben Affleck.

Crimes of Alternate Ending

Well, it's not until this very moment that I'm realizing we blew right past the Worth Mentioning segment. We might have also skipped the Patreon shout-outs. It's possible that we zig-zagged our way around the Amazon reads, reviews aaaand pretty much any detail that required preparation.

Why? Rob was out of the town this week and the every-5-year-disaster of Tim and I recording an episode alone, did happen.

To add to the mayhem, we were joined by some of our favorite Patreon supporters to add to the chat and QA.

We kick the episode off with a spoiler-free discussion of Crimes of the Future and then open it up to live QA.  After the break, we dive deep into spoilers and clarifications on erectile stature that we hope either Rob edited out, or, that you've turned it out.

Somehow. SOMEHOW.... we made it through, but we're sorry... and we hope to make it another 5 years before it happens again.

Tune in!

Top Gun: Maverick has us all in the clouds

We haven't all been this high on a movie since Rob saw Mad Max Fury Road at the Music Box (deep pull joke, but I'm still going with it. IYKYK.).  Gosh, sometimes it's just fun to agree.

Full disclosure, we can't really contain ourselves and we go full-spoiler right out of the gate.  Though, even after all the discussion, I can't really say any of it ruins the movie or gives anything away.  Beautiful people, fast planes, Tom Cruise being a bada$$... it's all stuff you know.  Truly, you have to see it to process it.

In worth mentioning, Carrie shares the provocative details of Jackass Forever (must to the dismay of every listener), while Rob reviews the latest reimagining of the horror flick Wrong Turn and Tim weighs in on The Bob's Burgers Movie.

Tune in to our Top Gun: Maverick spoiler episode and we hope you enjoy!
