Alternate Ending

Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized that they all shared a passion for movies. Tim had been reviewing films at his old blog Antagony & Ecstasy for over a decade, and Rob & Carrie had found great success with their year-old podcast, when they all decided to combine forces to create a new site, dedicated to their desire to watch and discuss the best (and worst) that cinema has to offer. The result is the website you see before you. What makes Alternate Ending different from all the other film sites on the internet? Well, we humbly suggest that it's the three of us: very different people with very different thoughts about the movie. Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well. This isn't a site for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a site for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a site for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a site for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It's a site that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It's a site about discovering good movies, one bad movie at a time.

Happy Monday!

It's good to be back after a little unplanned break.  Nothing gets the mind right like Tim cackle laughing at imagining Carrie and Rob's first (and only) bath together.  On this episode, Tim brings two new films out of Japan, Godzilla Minus One and The Boy and the Heron. Carrie has a whole batch of movies to choose from, but decides to go with the Netfix Original, Leave the World Behind.  Also, Patreon supporter, Brian Fowler, has Carrie review the classic teen-love-drama, Summer with Monika.

Tune in!

Sometimes, no matter how much money the studios throw at it, a movie just fails. Sometimes, the studio throws a whole lot of money at it before it becomes clear that's happening. And that's how you get, not merely a garden-variety failure, but a bonafide flop, the sort of horrific financial disaster that gets discussed with a giggle of schadenfreude in the trade press and passed around as a cautionary tale for years to come. 2023 has been an especially ugly year for megaflops, contributing two contenders for the dishonor of being one of the biggest money loser of all time in The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which makes it perfect timing for Patreon Kelleson to pick our next assignment: our picks for the top 5 flops of all time! We'll be looking at all the most notorious fiascos, boondoggles, and catastrophes that ever lit a massive pile on money on fire.

Thanks to all of you who joined us for the live recording!

On this week's episode, we are joined by the ever-so delightful Mandy Albert (and official Raspberry Picking correspondent) to round out our movie recommendations (or one's to avoid) for this week!

Tim brings his thoughts on Helen Mirren's newest feature Golda. Mandy lightly steams things up a bit with her thoughts on Tosca Musk and her 9 part series following the romantic affairs of Gabriel & Julia, in the Gabriel's Inferno series.  Carrie brings her rage towards the newest fright-flick Talk to Me and reminds listeners just how old she is by sharing a 30 min health update.

This week's topic was a doozy - but we were up for the challenge, as we picked our way through The Best and Worst Years for Movies, courtesy of Patreon Andrew Johnson.  Some years achieve legendary status right away, like the annus mirabilis of 1999; some grow their reputation with age and respectability, like the Hollywood golden epoch of 1939. Some years, there are pandemics and/or major industry-wide strikes, and people just plain stop putting out movies, except from some real dogs that nobody wanted to see anyways. We'll be looking at all of it as we contemplate this question more than a century in the making.

"Every movie's a circus", in the words of a song from the proudly mediocre Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Sunset Blvd. But we're going to be a little bit more selective than that. This episode came a week later than expected, due to unforeseen, lower than expectations reviews of the Indiana Jones series from the Jarosinski children.  With an extra week gone by, we were prepared to face the situation head on. Sort of. Thoughts differ on Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny, but thankfully Tim finds it in his heart to only break Carrie's heart in written form and mostly spare her feelings on air. Sort of.

With thanks to Patreon M.C. Steffen Tim brings his review of Little Boy.  In retaliation for Tim's recent IJ reviews, Carrie makes Tim sweat by sharing her thoughts on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which is assures him will be spoiler-free.

Tune in and we hope you have a great week!
